It was a memorable day for the town of Turriff as the town's football club marked its Highland League debut with a resounding 4-0 victory and a storming performance against visitors Brora Rangers at The Haughs.
A bumper crowd of 502 turned out to witness the historic match and they didn't have to wait long for some goalmouth action because on nine minutes, summer signing Darren McAllister cut onto his left foot 22 yards from goal and fizzed a shot inches over the crossbar.
The hosts broke the deadlock on the quarter-hour mark when full back Michael Ralton received a low pass from a free kick and from eight yards out on the right, he slammed a shot beyond Michael McCallum and into the roof of the net to score Turriff's first ever SHFL goal.
Turriff added a second only four minutes later when they were awarded a free kick 28 yards out. Centre half and captain Barry Massie stepped up and after a lengthy run up, he smashed a low shot that deflected off a couple of legs before sneaking into the corner of the net.
Ralton then tried to set up Craig Morrison on 33 minutes but his pass was cut out for a corner. From the delivery, Murray Reid directed a header goalwards but his effort was cleared from the goal line.
Brora were the width of the post away from halving the deficit at the other end when centre forward Robert MacDonald unleashed an effort that had Ross Buchanan beaten but came back off the woodwork.
Turriff had another effort cleared off the line as they broke up the park. This time it was Andrew Cummings who was the right man in the right place to hook the ball away after McAllister's cross was knocked on.
The home side netted a crucial third before half time though to give themselves a comfortable margin going into the break. A slick passing move between McAllister and Robbie Allan presented the latter with a shooting opportunity that he took full advantage of as he swept the ball over McCallum to make it three.

The hosts looked to continue to control things after the restart and the impressive Andy Hutchison sent over a tempting cross but Grant Noble and Craig Morrison couldn't quite apply the finishing touch despite both stretching for the ball.
Dave McKenzie was next to go close for Kris Hunter's side but his effort trundled just wide before McAllister cut inside in from the right and fired over with a left-footed drive.
Hutchison cut inside from the left and fed McKenzie but his effort was held by McCallum and then McAllister's corner set up the next goal on 75 minutes.
The former Deveronvale winger's delivery was headed down by Massie and a scramble on the goal line followed. The ball broke to substitute Martin McLeod though and he was able to poke home Turra's fourth goal of the afternoon.
Robbie Allan could have added a fifth for the home side when he sent a powerful drive goalwards but it was held by McCallum. Then there were a couple of goalmouth scrambles late on in favour of the home side before referee Graham Beaton blew the final whistle to round off the perfect start to Highland League life for Turriff. | |
