| Wick edge past Brora in North derby despite 'keeper's red card |
 |
Ten-man Wick Academy gained revenge for their derby defeat at Brora Rangers back in September by downing the Cattachs at Harmsworth Park - despite seeing goalkeeper Alan Bokas red carded in the first half with centre half Andrew Macleod taking over between the posts.
Wick started this game well and created a chance in the first minute. Richard MacAdie and Bryan McKiddie worked the ball from left to right to Gary Manson, whose cross into the box found Craig Shearer but he headed wide of the keeper's right hand post.
Manson came close to giving Wick the lead on 17 minutes. He cut in from the left to the edge of the box and his low, right-footed effort was tipped round the post by former wick ‘keeper Daniel Bell, who was making his first start for Brora since joining the Cattachs in the summer.
Wick nearly took the lead after 25 minutes. Stevie Cunningham's low cross from the right found Sam Mackay but his half volley from 16 yards few just over the bar.
Brora's first real chance of the game came on 31 minutes. The ball broke to Mark McKernie 25 yards from goal and his effort was just too high at the keeper's right hand post.
Wick took the lead on 37 minutes when Stewart Ross took a long free kick from the halfway line which Brora failed to clear and Mackay floated the ball back into the box. Davie Allan got the faintest of touches with his head to guide the ball into the bottom corner.
Brora got back into the game on 43 minutes when the evergreen Gary Farquhar floated in a free kick to the back post. Wick ‘keeper Alan Bokas failed to hold the first effort and as the striker was about to boot into an empty net, Bokas appeared to haul him down, resulting in the ref giving the goalkeeper a straight red and Brora a penalty. Andrew Macleod took over in goals but he was powerless to prevent Mark Lamont scoring from the spot.
Half time: Wick Academy 1 Brora Rangers 1
The first real action of the second half resulted in the winning goal. MacAdie won a free kick about 20 yards from goal and Sam Mackay's high, lofted ball seemed to be caught in the wind which pulled the ball into the goal over the helpless Bell.
Brora were now pushing for a goal and after 70 minutes Davie Ross had a header from a corner which deflected wide.
Brora's best chance to get back in the game came after 76 minutes. Ross was caught in possession by Jason Gunn but his shot was straight at stand-in ‘keeper Macleod.
From the throw out, Brora won the ball and forced it out to the right to Davie Ross. His low cross was touched as far as Thurso man Scott Begg but from about 15 yards, he could only fire over the bar.
Farquhar had a couple of half chances late on in the game for Brora but both of those chances were fired just off target. |
