Brora No Match For Inform Wick

Wick Academy reached the last four of the NuTel Communications North of Scotland Cup by dumping Brora Rangers 3-0 at Harmsworth Park. Only Inverness CT stand between The Scorries and an appearance in September's final.

Wick started this game the better of the two teams and took the lead after seven minutes. It all stemmed from a free kick 10 yards inside the Brora half on the left side of the pitch.

Martin Gunn played it short to Gary Weir who played the ball back to Gunn and then found Steven Cunningham's feet on the edge of the box. He turned and played a pass into the inside right channel for David Allan to run onto. The former Ross County and Elgin City striker latched onto the pass and he lifted a low show over the advancing keeper into the bottom left hand corner.

Wick had a great chance to double their lead on 19 minutes. The effort was a carbon copy of Allan's goal this time though Shaun Sinclair played the ball into Allan and he played Richard MacAdie in down the inside right channel but MacAdie lifted his shot just past of the left hand post.

Wick did however double their advantage after 25 minutes. Gary Manson played a lofted pass over the Brora defence to Allan. He then drove towards goal but as he was closed down, he cut back onto his left foot and his effort was well saved by the keeper. But the rebound fell kindly to Steven Cunningham and he volleyed home from 10 yards.

Brora's best chance of the half came after 34 minutes when John Colquhoun played a long diagonal ball which found Liam Baxter and he drove in from the right at the Wick defence. He laid the ball off to John Cameron and from the edge of the box he shot just wide.

Wick should have added a third in first half stoppage time. This time Cunningham did all the hard work as he picked up a throw in out on the left from Manson and waltzed past a couple of Brora players to the by-line. He then cut the ball back to Weir and from four yards the ball seemed to bounce off his shin and onto the crossbar.

Half time: Wick Academy 2 Brora Rangers 0

The second half was quieter on the attacking front with Wick quite happy to keep possession and let Brora come at them in an effort to try and tire them out.

However, it was Brora who had the first real chance of the half. Coming after 68 minutes, the Wick defence failed to deal with a long ball correctly and the ball fell to Jamie McKay and his first time volley from 25 yards went just over the Wick crossbar.

Wick's first real chance of the half came after 76 minutes when MacAdie fed in Allan down the right and from the by-line his cross was met by the onrushing Manson. But the Brora ‘keeper made a fantastic save to deny him with the rebound falling to MacAdie who screwed his effort wide.

On 85 minutes wick subs Ross Allan and Alan Farquhar combined to set up MacAdie and from about 25 yards out he fired an effort just wide.

Wick put the game beyond doubt on 88 minutes as Ross Allan ran at the Brora defence and as he went to skip past Cameron, the Brora man brought him down to give Wick a penalty. Martin Gunn stepped up to try and make it three out of three from the spot this season, however his effort low to the Brora keeper's right was saved but gunn got up to head the rebound in.
